I messaged Paresh from Curry Smugglers and asked him to share his favorite playlist of shaadi songs for all of you Dulhans! I’ve really enjoyed Curry Smugglers podcast episodes — Paresh and Sachin never fail to entertain me whether I’m listening to their show while driving, working out in the gym, or listening to them on iTunes on my computer. It’s always a treat! A Sincere Thanks to Paresh from the Curry Smugglers for his blog post. Make sure you catch their Season 3 Finale as well as previous episodes available on iTunes or download them from
Earlier in August, your host asked for a little help from the @CurrySmugglers for their take on wedding songs. I took up the offer since I was already in travel mode and heading towards India during ‘wedding season’.
In all honesty, I started with a list of at least 20+ songs but then hemmed and hawed it down to 15 and then as I went further into this effort, I finally came down to a list of ‘wedding related’ songs versus just ‘wedding ceremony’ songs. If I were given the opportunity to script a marriage then these songs would make up my soundtrack. On that note, might I add, there were not many songs around that showed a girl’s POV in a romantic light versus a silly “yay-I’m-getting-married light.”
So here goes, a list of my favorite ‘wedding’ related songs. Right from the realization that the fool, er, boy realizes he wants to get married to the girl then into the latter stages through marriage :) Enjoy.
Realization. Boy wakes up one day and decides that procreation is in order.
Jis Din Mera Biyah Hoyega ~ Toh Baat Pakki
He then issues a proposal [Smuggler Style]Mujhse Shaadi Karogi - MSK
Followed by the Mehendi / Engagement and various things in laws do to each other.Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna - DDLJ
The Baraat - where tradition dictates that the groom’s side dances like utter mad men and throws loads of money in the air Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai - Aadmi Sadak Ka
And of course - Le Jayenge Le Jayenge
Followed by the usual Rasam stuff at weddings which requires
a) patience b) mad dancing skills and did I mention c) patience?
Joote De Do Paise Le Lo - Hum Aapke Hai Kaun
Sada Mama Bada Great - Malkit Singh

Punjabi Wedding Song ~ Bride and Prejudice
And finally, the Bidai/Vidaii. If you don’t cry at this point at any desi wedding, please hand over your desi card at the nearest exit.
There you have it! I know that the list is heavy on the Hum Aapke… songs but can you blame me? That movie is actually two steps short of being a Discovery channel feature on the prototypical Indian wedding. I have to point out that I am not aware of other sub cultures in India and their specific context tracks. I know both MDD and I are willing to explore deeper into those realms! Hit us up with feedback :) Cheers!
I hope all of you enjoyed today’s blog post! Don’t forget to add these songs to your Mehendi, Shaadi, Baraat, and Vidaii playlists!
